The Snake Nebula - posted 5/31/08
Barnard 72, the Snake nebula is a very southerly object for my lattitude but on this night I had conditions about as good as they get for trying it. Cool, dry, clear, above average seeing, and no moon! Two nights in a row! That doesn't happen often. I was actually waiting for the teapot to clear the neighbors tree and took some luminance of the snake while waiting. It looked good so I followed up with some color the next night. Exposure time was low on this one (I rarely attempt more than one object at a time for this reason) but the conditions really helped. I used the HA filter instead of red figuring it might help keep the red channel background less bright, the tube was nearly parallel to the ground while shooting this!
